What is Wudu?
In Islam, you need to prepare yourself mentally, physically and spiritually to perform Salah. A large part of this preparation is known as Wudu. It is an act of washing your specific body parts for the purpose of purification. Wudu is the prerequisite and mandatory for performing Salah or Namaz (prayers). Without Wudhu, your Salah is considered invalid.
Importance of Wudu
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“No salah is accepted without wudu (purification)”
Sahih Muslim, Book 2, Hadith 2
So, Wudu is itself a kind of worship and purification that is necessary to perform Salah. As Salah is the second pillar of Islam. That’s why it is necessary for every Muslim, men and women, to learn how to make Wudu correctly.
Let’s learn how to make Wudu in Islam.
How to Make Wudu Step-by-Step in Islam?
In Islam, for every act, we need to make the intention to do it for the sake of Allah Almighty (SWT). Therefore, we first need to make niyyat or intention to make Wudu for performing Salah for Allah’s sake. Once this niyyat is done, you need to perform cleanliness starting from washing hands and ending it by washing your feet and reciting the Sahada and dua, once the Wudu is made.
Follow these steps to make Wudu step-by-step:
Step 1: Make your Intention (Niyyah) to Make Wudu
Since Islam teaches us that intention forms the basis of any action, it is necessary that, before you perform Wudu, you make the niyyat or intention for it. This will not be a verbal act – you only have to mentally prepare yourself for an act that will cleanse and purify you.
Step 2: Say “Bismillah” Before Starting Wudu
Recite bismi-llahi ar-rahmani ar-rahim (In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful).
Step 3: Begin by Washing your Hands
Completely wash your right hand three times with clean water, then move on to the left and repeat. When washing, remember not to miss any part of the hands – wash between the fingers and thumb, too.
Step 4: Rinse mouth
Take water in your right palm and rinse your mouth with it, thrice. Do not swallow the water on purpose, but spit it out every time.
Step 5: Cleaning the Nose
Using your right hand, carefully and gently put water into your nostrils, before exhaling it. Perform this step three times.
Step 6: Wash your Face
Thoroughly wash your face, beginning from the hairline on your forehead and from one ear to the other. This step, too, must be performed three times.
Step 7: Wash your Arms
Begin with your right hand. Wet it with water, and wash from your wrist up to your elbow. Repeat thrice; then do the same to your left arm.
Step 8: Perform Masah
Usually, Masah refers to the religious act of cleaning one’s head, in a specific way, with a small amount of water. For performing Masah, wet your hands and place your palms, flat, on the top of your head (where the hairline begins).
Wipe them to the back of your neck, and then back again to the front. Now wet the back of both ears by placing your thumbs behind them. Use your index and middle fingers to wash the front and back of your ears. Masah is done only once.
Step 9: Wash feet
Start with your right foot. Wash it thrice from the toes, up to the ankles. Make sure you wash between your toes, too. Do the same to your left foot.
Remember: Once Wudu is performed, it does not need to (but can) be performed again until it is invalidated.
Step 10: Dua After Wudhu?
After completing wudu, it is sunnah to recite the following dua, which is essentially the Shahada (testimony of faith):
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
Ashhadu an lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ‘abduhu wa rasūluhu.
“I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, who has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.” Sahih Muslim 234
These blessed words reaffirm one’s faith right after attaining purity. In essence, you are declaring the oneness of Allah and the messengership of Prophet Muhammad once more. What a perfect way to conclude wudu. You cleanse your body, then renew your belief with your tongue and heart.
This dua is mentioned in authentic hadith collections. For example, Sahih Muslim narrates from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said whoever performs wudu properly then says this Shahada, “the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever of them he wishes.” This emphasizes how beloved this remembrance is to Allah. By reciting it, we seek Allah’s acceptance of our wudu and prayer, and hope for the ultimate reward (entry into Jannah).
Another Sunnah Dua After Wudu
Some narrations also indicate that the Prophet ﷺ would occasionally add a short prayer for spiritual purity after the Shahada above. You may choose to say the following additional dua after wudu, although it’s not obligatory:
اللّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ
Allāhumma j‘alnī mina t-tawwābīna waj‘alnī mina l-mutaṭahhirīn.
“O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent to You, and make me among those who purify themselves.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi 55
These prophetic words beautifully complement the first dua. We ask Allah to keep us among the repentant (those who turn back to Him) and the purified. It highlights that wudu is not just about physical cleanliness. It is also about spiritual purification. We seek Allah’s help to remain clean from sins through repentance, just as we cleansed our bodies with water.
Some books of du’a also mention another phrase of praise and repentance –“Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā Anta, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk,” meaning “Glory and praise be to You, O Allah… I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You”. This final part is often known as the Kalimah of Kafaratul-Majlis, usually said after gatherings, and is sometimes cited after wudu as well. It’s not as commonly recited for wudu, but there is no harm in saying it as a general dhikr.

Through Wudhu, we cleanse not only our body but also prepare our heart and mind to stand humbly before Allah (SWT).
